Black Maternal Health Week

In African American traditions, the concept of community caregiver or "granny midwife" emerged during slavery and carried through the Jim Crow era. These women were vital in providing maternal care when hospitals excluded or mistreated Black women.

 

Today concludes "Black Maternal Health Week" and A Mother's Cry & Sylvia's Sister Circle were honored to share in a much needed conversation regarding the sacred experience of birth with Doula Sheiron Crawford Mackritis.

Today begins the celebration of the "Black Maternal Health Week" 2025. Beginning today, I will share some of my sister, Sylvia's story in addition to some powerful, real quotes from Black Birth Workers & Activists.

In late December 1998 and January 1999, my pregnant sister, Sylvia, repeatedly went to the doctor complaining of pain and discomfort. Each time she was barely examined and sent home.
