The Cry That Will Not Be Silenced!

By Jamesina E. Greene | A Mother’s Cry

There is a cry that echoes through the prison walls, past the razor wire, and into the heart of every mother who knows her child was swallowed by a system built on injustice. It is the cry of a mother who raised her son with love, only to watch him be labeled a criminal, denied compassion, and sentenced not just to time—but to erasure.

I am that mother.

And I am not alone.

Across Maryland and this nation, our sons and daughters are enduring inhumane prison conditions—cells surpassing 100 degrees, days without showers, little access to food or medical care, no outside yard time, sewage backing up through their cells, and psychological deterioration in lockdown isolation.

We’re told this is justice. But I ask—whose justice?

Because what I see…is slavery with a new name.

When my son Byron was sentenced to 50 years, it wasn’t just his freedom that was stripped—it was mine, too. And every day, I fight not only for his release, but for the redemption of truth and humanity in a system that has abandoned both.

✊🏽 WE DEMAND:

  • Immediate review of excessive lockdown policies

  • Legislative accountability for prison abuse and misconduct

  • Transparency on suspicious deaths behind bars

  • Compassionate release for aging, ill, and wrongfully incarcerated individuals

  • Support for families who carry the unseen weight of mass incarceration

I founded A Mother’s Cry so no mother would have to scream into the void alone. Our voices are rising—collectively—and we will not be silenced.

To every lawmaker, warden, journalist, and neighbor reading this—we are watching. And we are mobilizing.

Not for vengeance. But for justice that restores. Justice that liberates. Justice that finally tells the truth.
