While there are those in the fight for voting rights of incarcerated persons (some jails actually allow eligibility for them to vote), there are those of us outside those walls who can act now. We have the ability to end incarceration by voting in the interest of this desired result. As discussed in a guide provided by the Prison Policy Initiative organization, while we are acutely focused on the upcoming presidential election, many other elections and/or races have direct impacted on the much-needed reform of the criminal justice system.
If you are interested in ending the CRISIS of mass incarceration in this country, you MUST pay attention to the following elections: LOCAL OFFICES = sheriffs, mayors, school board members and county clerks; STATE OFFICES = governors, state legislators, state auditors and judges; FEDERAL OFFICES = the president and member of congress
KNOW your candidates and elected officials and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.
Realistically, no one individual nor office can fix this mass incarceration CRISIS, but we must be knowledgeable about what is going on and PROACTIVE in our demands for reform and sustainable change.
